French Onion Beef: A Savory and Hearty Recipe
French Onion Beef is a rich, savory dish that combines the deep flavors of caramelized onions, tender beef, and aromatic herbs. This dish takes inspiration from the classic French onion soup, which is known for its deliciously sweet and savory flavor profile, but incorporates beef for a heartier meal. It’s perfect for cozy dinners, special occasions, or when you’re craving a comforting yet sophisticated dish.
Ingredients:
- For the French Onion Beef:
- 1 lb (450g) beef steak (ribeye, sirloin, or flank steak work well)
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- ½ cup dry white wine (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons flour (optional, for thickening)
- For the topping:
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated (or Swiss cheese)
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- 1-2 slices of crusty baguette or French bread (optional, for serving)
Directions:
1. Prepare the French Onion Beef:
- Begin by preparing the beef. Pat the steak dry with a paper towel and season generously with salt and pepper. If you prefer, you can also rub the steak with a little olive oil for an extra layer of flavor.
2. Cook the Beef:
- Heat a skillet or pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sear the steak for 3-4 minutes per side (depending on thickness) until it’s browned and cooked to your desired level of doneness. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside to rest while you prepare the onions.
3. Caramelize the Onions:
- In the same pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, allowing the onions to soften and slowly caramelize. They should turn golden brown and become sweet and tender. You may need to adjust the heat to prevent burning, especially towards the end of the cooking time.
4. Add Garlic and Herbs:
- Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic and thyme. Stir for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. You can also sprinkle in the flour at this stage if you prefer a thicker sauce, stirring to combine.
